How do you know when it’s time to let something go? What are your best practices?

I know it’s time to let something go when it’s no longer serving me or adding value to my life. It can be hard to measure or see when it’s happening, but every action, decision, and relationship in our lives either strengthens us and adds meaning to our lives or it does not. Best practice is to reflect monthly on how you spent your time and energy the past month. Was there anything that felt like it was more effort than the results it produced? Did any of your relationships or projects bring you more stress than it did happiness? In order to continue moving forward in life, it’s important to take that time to reflect and decide if anything is worth letting go.

Ask yourself this! Are you gaining knowledge? Are you gaining enjoyment? Are you gaining growth? If you answered NO to all 3 of these questions – it’s time to packup and move on! If you answered Yes to 2 or more – perhaps it’s time to dig deeper to see WHY you answered No – and Fix it!

If something is no longer in alignment, it is time to let it go. This can look like something that brings more frustration, more resistance, or is not something that is working towards your goals – it’s time to let it go. When I encounter these shifts, I meditate on it and the reasons it is no longer in alignment. I make note of what I learned, and how I grew away from it. Then, I come up with a strategy to release it, which can vary from task, project, client, or item.

It’s time to let something go when it doesn’t serve the person you are becoming. I intentionally carve out 30 minutes each day to be alone. I often sit in the backyard and listen to the wind & wildlife while I reflect on my decisions, relationships, and goals. My health and my family’s well-being are a priority. This priority allows me to let go of the barriers that delay me and those I love from reaching our potential.

It is time to let something go when you realize it is not producing fruit. If you have worked at something and it does not bring you joy, serve a purpose, meet a need or yield an abundance, it is time to let it go. You need to evaluate your actions and goals constantly and ask yourself those questions.

I know it’s time to let something go when it’s not aligning with my values, vision, mission &/or goals. If something isn’t “jiving” or working, I look to these as my North Star – both personally and professionally. An example of this is the very tough decision to pivot out of B to C to only B to B customers. In order to allow our work to touch a broader audience, we needed to use our resources to attract business clients vs. 1:1. Ultimately, this is the right move and in one year we tripled the number of people we were able to touch.
