Branding can encompass an overwhelming amount of things when it comes to our visual identity.
So, for the purposes of this article – and to ensure you don’t get caught in perfectionism’s seductive clutches – we are going to discuss the 4 essential branding elements for your podcast.
1. Your Podcast Name
Your podcast name is the first impression, a doorway for your audience to step into your world.
Whilst it might be tempting to get clever with your podcast name, it is important to remember that it should be clear, concise, AND reflective of your content.
Aim for no more than 4 words and use language that resonates with your audience and hints at the results or experiences you offer.
Pro tip: Check the availability of the .com domain for your chosen name to establish a cohesive online presence.
2. Your Podcast Cover
Your podcast cover is the visual handshake with your audience. Canva, a user-friendly graphic design tool, is your ally here as its beginner-friendly templates provide a great starting point.
Customize your chosen template with your brand colors, fonts, podcast name, and imagery.
Remember to keep it simple. Stick to 2-3 primary colors and no more than two font types. Perfection isn’t the goal; a cover that resonates and represents your podcast authentically is.
Pro tip: Check out what podcasts show up for similar topic areas and make sure your podcast cover colors, typography and visual identity contrasts against them.
3. Your Music
Music sets the tone of your podcast but for those of us who do not have any experience in production, it can be a little overwhelming.
Uppbeat.io is a great online resource for license-free music. Whether you’re looking for a short jingle or a longer piece for voice-overs, the platform caters to all needs.
Make sure to choose music that matches the theme and vibe of your podcast.
There are two main options:
-
-
-
-
- A longer version for a detailed introduction (like in Pat Flynn’s The Smart Passive Income Online Business and Blogging Podcast) or
- A shorter version for a concise start (like in Brene Brown’s Unlocking Us)
-
-
-
And remember, no decision is forever. Your chosen music can evolve with your podcast.
4. Your Podcast Description
Your podcast description is where you verbally invite your audience into your world.
It should clearly articulate who the podcast is for, what listeners can gain from it, and why you are the voice worth listening to. This is where you make your pitch to potential listeners, so include social media links and your website for those who want to dive deeper.
With a clear name, inviting cover, specific description and engaging music, you are – quite literally – setting the stage for an impactful show.
And like with all things creative, the most important thing is to get your new podcast out there and start learning from real time feedback from your people.
