Faces of KNOW: Mariel Montero
Mariel Montero is the owner of Huma Mexican Comfort restaurant and 2019 KNOW Edmonton Vol. 1 Featuree!
Mariel Montero was born in Puebla, a city in Mexico, and learned to appreciate good home-cooking from her Abuelita (grandmother). After graduating from five years of Culinary School, she looked forward to traveling and honing her skills at various restaurants in Mexico, Spain, and Montreal, Canada.
She saw Canada as a land of great opportunities where she could realize a dream of opening her own restaurant to feature the Mexican home-style cooking she grew up with. She came to Canada in 2007, became a contestant on Chopped Canada Season 1, and experimented with several well-received “Taco Days” pop-ups before opening her own establishment, HUMA, in 2015.
She’s proud to say she became a Canadian citizen in 2017. The opportunity to be successful in any business venture in Canada, is definitely available to anyone willing to do the work. A passion for cooking and sharing her Abuela’s recipes has been realized in the country she now calls home.
We asked Mariel to share FIVE fun facts in order to get to KNOW her better.
1. I love my bostons so i do spend a lot of time with them, playing in the
park or just taking long walks and of course in the winter we have to find other stuff to entertain them.
2. What I miss the most of my hometown is my grandmother, so every time
that I have the chance to travel with her I don’t doubt it for a second.
This past summer we went to San Francisco.
3. Something that I really enjoy from the restaurant is the fact that we are located in front of a
music venue so we invite the musicians for dinner and I really enjoy cooking and meeting them and also asking to sign our piano.
4. We have a really busy life being restaurant owners, so I think it’s
important to still make time for the love of my life so I do enjoy to
go out with my hubbie even if it’s hockey night!
5. Since August 2019, I started the snake diet (fasting) and have lost
over 45 pounds. I have never felt better and I’m training really hard to
keep on losing the weight, so I can feel better all the time…I do
like to swim a lot too.
