Amplify Her Voice: Sherrel Sampson

KNOW Book + Tribe kicked off a brand new series called Amplify Her Voice. It is a storytelling series focused on amplifying the voices of our Black female business leaders and members. Each day we will be featuring one new KNOW member and they will be sharing their stories and advice.

Meet Sherrel Sampson, Founder & CEO of Canviiy

Sherrel is an outstanding business woman who is making big strides in the beauty industry. Born and raised in the Bahamas, Sherrel and her family moved to the United States while she was in high school.  She began her career in marketing working in the hospitality and tech industries, before finding her real passion: cosmetics and personal care. Fast forward a few years, Sherrel has retired from working for others and is running her own big operation that produces premium organic based hair care products. Find out how she went from selling at festivals to now being sold in Target!

Takeaways from Sherrel:

1. The journey is not always what you imagine it to be. “I thought I was going to create this cute, hip beauty brand for tweens or college girls. And it was so funny just by looking at the data, I was so wrong because our core customer was between the ages of 25 and 55.”

2. How far she has come“We launched in November 2015, and it’s just been a great journey. We started out in doing small local festivals, [we] also did some farmer’s markets.”  “Now [we have] distribution in Target, over 200 stores. [We] also have distribution in independent beauty stores.”

3. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. “Choosing to eat the best food that you can at any one particular time, sleeping, prioritizing your self care, and most important, not accepting that chronic conditions like fatigue, obesity, depression, and other chronic diseases are normal and acceptable.”

What Sherrel is most proud of: “we also have a wonderful partnership with a healthcare organization called Moffitt Cancer Center. And Moffitt Cancer Center is really near and dear to our hearts is because their patients, as they’re going through treatments, deal with hair loss and deal with intense scalp irritation from new growth. And we are the preferred scalp health brand within that organization. That’s really something that’s special to me and special to the Canviiy team.
